Betty R. Widrick, 76, of 5247 Clinton Street, Lowville died Monday, April 8, 2013, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, surrounded by her family.
The funeral will be Friday, April 12th, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church, New Bremen, with Bruce Chartrand, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the First Mennonite Church Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 11th, at the First Mennonite Church, New Bremen. Arrangements are with lseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
Betty was born July 28, 1936, youngest daughter of Benjamin and Madeline Yousey Roggie. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to Clinton Street, where she currently lived. She graduated from Lowville Academy in 1954. She went to work for Lowville Central School District on August 1, 1954 as secretary to Dr. Kenneth E. Ford, who had been newly named as Vice Principal.
On November 21, 1959, Betty married Gerald W. Widrick, son of Leon and Katherine Lehman Widrick, at the First Mennonite Church. Gerald worked for Climax Mfg., retiring after 43 years of service. Mr. Widrick died August 10, 2007. They were married almost 48 years.
Betty had four children. Lynn and Charlene Widrick, and their sons Dallas Sutton, and Connor and Kristen Sutton, all of Ogdensburg; Neil and Arisa Widrick, and their children John Van Fossen, Benjamin and Katherine, all of Camillus; Gail and Nicki Kogut, and their three sons, Victor, Vincent, and Nicholas, all of Watertown; Kari and John Taylor, and their children, Rachel and Doug Freeman, Derek Jeffers, of Lowville, and Zachary Taylor of Florida. She has one sister, Doris Steria, of Lowville. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pauline Roggie and Verna Roggie, both of Lowville, Inez Roggie of Natural Bridge, Ruth Widrick of Beaver Falls, Imelda Hills of Lowville, Douglas and Frances Widrick of Mt. Bethel, Pa., Glenn and Anna Margie Widrick of Croghan, and Norman and Betty Yousey of Castorland. Betty has two great grandsons, and one on the way, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Garmon Roggie, in 1990, Paul Roggie, in 1996, and Howard Roggie in 2004.
After raising her family, Betty returned to work at the Chamber of Commerce from 1972-1976. Then in 1978, she went back to work as Librarian clerk at LACS. In 1982, she started to work in the District Office doing payroll. She retired August 1, 1998. Betty was community oriented and filled many positions. She planned many bus trips for the local senior citizens. She was very involved in church activities and held several positions including Sunday school secretary, Vacation Bible School coordinator, and secretary for Senior Fellowship. She served on the Board of Directors for the Agape Shoppe for 10 years. She was a member of the Lewis County Educational Office Professionals, and was a council member at church.
