HAILESBORO -- Betty J. Shrewsberry, age 81, of Hailesboro, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at her daughter, Kim’s home in Newton Falls under the care of Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
There will be calling hours for Betty on Sunday, August 27, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Her funeral service will be on Monday, August 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Shane Lynch officiating. Burial will follow at Hailesboro Cemetery. Betty was born on June 23, 1936 in Watertown, to the late Buryl and Thelma (Mallett) Woodard. She attended the Watertown Catholic School. Betty married Kelzo Shrewsberry on October 8, 1955 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church. Kelzo passed away on November 29, 2016.
Betty was the code enforcement officer for the Towns of Fowler, Edwards, Rossie and most recently Pitcairn. She was previously a nurses’ aide at E. J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing scrabble, doing cross word puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren, but most of all, she enjoyed taking care of her husband.
Surviving are two sons, Blane and Laurie Shrewsberrry of Gouverneur and Steven “Rip” Shrewsberry of Hailesboro; three daughters, Mary Shrewsberry of Gouverneur, Beryl Martin and her companion Rick Hardin of Fine and Kim and Jamie Provost of Newton Falls; a brother, Donald Woodard of Soccororro, New Mexico; and 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and one more on the way.
