Betty J. Davis, age 85, of Kinney Nursing Home, formerly of Hailesboro Street, Gouverneur and Little York Road, Fowler, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 at the nursing home.
Betty was born April 25, 1925 in Fowler, the child of Lawrence and Bessie Scott Davis. Betty was honored as Valedictorian of the Gouverneur High School class of 1941. Betty attended Cornell University and graduated from Skidmore College in 1945. She later received a Master of Arts Degree in Romance Language from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Ms. Davis worked as an editor at the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. from 1945-1947. Returning to Gouverneur, Betty was the assistant advertising manager at the Gouverneur Tribune Press from 1951-1958. In 1958, Betty was on the staff of the NY Republican State Committee in Albany. She served as the Fowler town clerk from 1962-1967. From 1968-1971, Ms. Davis served as women’s program coordinator at SUNY ATC in Canton. Ms. Davis was one of the founding members of the Gouverneur Reading Room Association. Ms. Davis served as the Librarian at the Gouverneur Public Library from 1974 until her retirement in 1994. Betty also worked at her family’s store in Fowler years ago.
Ms. Davis was a member of the St. Lawrence Traveler’s Club. Betty enjoyed reading and spending time at her camp on Sylvia Lake.
Betty is survived by cousins Janet Franke of Winston-Salem, NC, Helen Taliaferro of Snellville, GA, Johnstone Scott of Chapel Hill, NC, Jane Scott of Gouverneur, Julie Mason of South Carver, MA, and Robert Guinn and Margaret Bisson of Barre, VT.

A funeral service will be held Friday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. There are no calling hours and burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur
