Bernice M. Sunda Jacobs, 75, Akwesasne

Mrs. Bernice M. Sunday Jacobs, “Kahsennenha:wi”,75, 886 River Road, Snye, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at her home.

Bernice was born on November 15, 1934 in Snye, Quebec, daughter of John B. Sunday and Louse White. She attended schools in Snye. On June 20, 1955, she married Donald P. Jacobs, Sr. at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. He predeceased her on January 12, 1986.

She once worked at Rockwell Industrial and General Electric, both in Syracuse. After returning to Akwesasne, she worked at Akwesasne Headstart Program, where she was a “Tota”. She was a member of Kateri Circle and Quebec Native Women’s Association. She enjoyed basketmaking, quilting, and picking sweetgrass. She was an avid collector of antiques and china, and also enjoyed going to garage sales. She loved playing ace to king and gambling.

Bernice is survived by her ten children, Ernest Jacobs of Montreal, Phillip Jacobs Jr. of Snye, Helena Jacobs of Syracuse, Louis “Luigi” and Daniel Jacobs of Snye, Carmella Colon and her husband Pete of Cornwall, Katrina “Digga” Jacobs and her companion, David Colon of Rooseveltown, Regina Jacobs of Snye, Christopher “LaBoy” Jacobs of Syracuse, and Ira Jacobs of Snye; 44 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren; and a chosen brother, Dennis Lazore, of Snye.

She was predeceased by a brother, Archie Sunday, in 1995.

Friends may call at the Homemakers, Snye, beginning at noon on Wednesday until Thursday, at 10 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, officiating. The body will be then transferred to Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, where calling hours will be held on Friday. Prayer services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with burial following in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
