Bernice E. Wheat, 82, Edwards, passed away Monday, Dec. 17 at her home.
Bernice was a legal secretary for 23 years in a Newark, NJ law firm, retiring in 1972. In 1985, she moved to Edwards with her husband Kenneth Wheat and her son Bill Wheat.
Born in Newark, NJ on April 25, 1930, Bernice graduated from Nutley High School in 1948 and from Berkley College in East Orange, NJ in 1949.
Bernice married Kenneth Wheat on July 10, 1954 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harrison, NJ. Kenneth Wheat passed away May 25, 2008.
The couple has a son, Bill Wheat, who has owned and operated Wheat's Nursery, LLC in Edwards for over 20 years. Bernice was the bookkeeper for the greenhouse and assisted Bill with transplanting work and assisted him with sales when the greenhouse was open.
She served as the ways and means chairman for the Yantacaro School Mother's Club, Nutley, NJ for 2 years as well as past president. Bernice also was past president of National Bowling Association and was a choir member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where she and her family were members. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, reading, and jigsaw puzzles.
Surviving besides her son are a daughter-in-law Danielle LaPoint Wheat, and two granddaughters Morgan Lee and Cadey Grace Wheat.
There are no calling hours or funeral services and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Hermon.
