Bernard F. “Bernie” Reed Sr., 66, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at Canton - Potsdam Hospital.

Bernard was born October 21, 1943 in Canton, the son of Frederick Reed Sr. and Marion Cook. He graduated from Hermon - DeKalb School in 1961. Bernie worked on the family farm, delivered milk for Sunnyside Dairy, and worked construction on various projects. Bernie established his own construction company in 1967 which he owned and operated for over forty years.

Bernie was known to be a community leader and was involved in several civic projects. He served as justice of the peace and town supervisor in Hermon, assisted in the development of area playgrounds and McBrier Manor Housing, and assisted several area farmers and individuals during the Ice Storm.

Bernie enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, and spending time with his family. He took great pride in teaching young people respect and responsibility, whether it was in building something or safety in hunting.

Bernie married Margaret “Peggy” Grant on August 6, 1988 at their home in Hermon with Bill Lloyd officiating. He had previously been married to Phyllis Allen.

Bernie is survived by his wife Peggy; his mother, Marion Reed of Hermon; his children, Robert Reed of Hermon, Kelly Reed of Hermon, Bernard Reed Jr. of Hermon, Robert and Wren Ferrick of Buffalo, Jason and Angela Ferrick of Gouverneur, Margaret and Travis Dox of Rensselaer Falls, Shaun Ferrick of DeKalb Jct., Kathryn and John Stransky of Hermon, and Taylor Grant of Hermon; a brother, Frederick Reed Jr. of Hermon; a sister, Rose Warren of Hermon; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Frederick Reed Sr; and a granddaughter, Alina Stransky.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Hermon Cemetery with Bill Scott, pastor of the Bread of Life Fellowship, DeKalb officiating. A celebration of life will follow the service at the Hermon Fire Hall. There are no calling hours and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Hermon.
