EDWARDS – Bernard E. Sloan, Jr. passed away at his home in Edwards on Wednesday, November 6, 2013.
Bernard was born on August 3, 1937 in Gouverneur. His parents were the late Bernard E. and Ina Irene (Morehouse) Sloan, Sr. Bernard attended school in Edwards and received his G.E.D.
Mr. Sloan served in the United States Airforce from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1963. He had spent one and a half years in Japan, being deployed in Mount Suriama and Itazuki.
He married Irene Swinyer on October 23, 1958 in Edwards. Irene passed away on July 19, 1996.
Bernard was an independent truck driver for over 50 years before retiring on August 23, 2008. He had worked for Stone Transport, driving zinc to Canada; and also for the Saratoga County ARC as a bus and tractor-trailer driver from 1997 until 2002. Bernard loved driving truck. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he enjoyed his door-to-door ministry; as it allowed him to meet many different people.
His survivors include three daughters, Pamela Failing of Rochester, Tina Sloan of Rochester, Leslie Tedesco of Richville; four sons, Anthony Sloan of Richmond, VA, Craig Sloan of Edwards, Bernard Sloan III of Rochester, Benjamin Sloan of Ballston Spa; two brothers, John and Robert Sloan; six sisters, Beverly Thomas, Joyce Phelps, Marilyn Mackin, Janet Easton, Rita Bukowski, Ina Ober, and thirteen grandchildren.
There will be a service held at the Ogdensburg Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 5442 St. Hwy. 812, Ogdensburg NY 13669 on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Condolences may be made online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.
