LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – Bernard “Bernie” Rivers, 68, of Liverpool and formerly of Massena, passed away on Saturday, after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 425 Beechwood Ave., Liverpool with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling hours are 3 to 7 pm Wednesday June 9, 2010 at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 Rt. 31, Baldwinsville.
Bernie grew up in Massena as the second of five sons, born to Denery and Fernande Rivers. He moved to the Syracuse area in 1959 to attend CCBI.
In 1964, Bernie assumed ownership of the family-owned Galeville Grocery on the Old Liverpool Road and continued to operate the business until his passing. He was a dedicated and respected businessman who contributed much to the quality of life for the Liverpool community.
He was a devoted family man who took great pride in his home and the achievements of his children. He enjoyed attending Syracuse University football and basketball games with family members and friends. Bernie was an avid golfer and skier who approached these sports with the same zeal that set the standard for his life.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jean (Tucci) Rivers; his son David A. Rivers of Buffalo; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian J. and Marjorie (Chen) Rivers of Liverpool; one daughter, Mary K. Rivers of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandchildren Benjamin and Madeline Rivers; and his sister-in-law Marilyn Tucci of Liverpool. He is also survived by his mother, Fernande Rivers of Tennessee; his three brothers, Gilbert of Minnesota, J. Philip of France and Maurice of Tennessee; and many extended family members.
Bernie was predeceased by his father Denery Rivers, his brother Norman Rivers and his in-laws Art and Mary Tucci.
