Funeral services for Alma H. Houmiel, age 92, of Washington Street, will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Notre Dame Church at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waddington. Calling hours will be held on September 10, 2010 at Frary Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Houmiel passed away on September 6, 2010 at United Helpers Nursing Home.
Mrs. Houmiel is survived by two daughters, Bette Zinner and her husband, David of Fredericksburg, VA and Diane Mitchell and her husband Mark of Ogdensburg; one son, James and his wife Kathy of Waddington; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one sister, Marguerite Higgins of New Hartford; and one brother, Francis Thompson of NJ.
She was predeceased by daughter, Barbara Sanneman in 2006; one sister, Blanche Colduin; and three brothers, Harold, Lloyd and Howard Thompson.
Mrs. Houmiel was born on July 10, 1918 in Brushton, the daughter of Mose and Elizabeth (Murphy) Thompson. She graduated from Brushton High school in 1937. She graduated from St. Lawrence School of Nursing in 1940 where she received her RN degree. She first went to work for Presbyterian Hospital in New York and later retiring from the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as Evening Supervisor at the Letchworth Building. She married Amos Houmiel on May 3, 1941 in Morristown with Rev. Noel Zimmerman officiating. Mr. Houmiel passed away on June 27, 2004.
Mrs. Houmiel enjoyed walking and the Boston Red Sox.
