MASSENA -- Youth Horizons clubhouse, 56 Main St., spent some time on a recent day picking up tobacco litter and cigarette butts around the clubhouse, and organization officials say they “were surprised at how much they found.”
They surveyed a one-block area and collected 2.5 gallons of tobacco litter and cigarette butts within 45 minutes.
The Massena Police Department helped with the cleanup.
“The young people were shocked to see the amount of tobacco litter surrounding the clubhouse, where they play every day,” a Horizons news release said.
They have organized another cigarette butt cleanup for Wednesday March 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. the clubhouse.
"They hope community members will join them in the fight to keep butts away from where they play," the release said.
