PYRITES – An overheated woodstove pipe is the suspected cause of a fire that caused heavy structural damage to a 38 Churchill St at 5 a.m. Thursday, according to St. Lawrence County fire investivators.

Joseph M. Coffy owned the property, which was occupied by two people. Canton and Pyrites fire departments initially responded to the call and were later supported by Rensselaer Falls, DeKalb, Hermon, Richville, Pierrepont and Morley fire departments.

Gouverneur and Potsdam departments were on standby.

Investigators say the fire likely started from an overheated woodstove pipe.

The home was insured.
