OGDENSBURG – A woman who appeared to police to be in crisis jumped from the east span of Twin Bridges Tuesday and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after being pulled out of the Oswegatchie River by a police sergeant.

The woman, unidentified by Ogdensburg police, was spotted by off-duty Patrolman Keith Morgan just after noon on the wrong side of the railing and “appeared to be in crisis,” the press release from Ogdensburg police said.

Morgan notified the police department and went around to assist. Patrols arrived, blocked off the span to traffic and tried speaking with the woman. “She ultimately purposely fell backwards off the bridge into the water below,” the statement said.

Once in the water, Ogdensburg Police Sergeant Matthew R. Erwin swam out 30 to 40 yards to the woman, and pulled her to shore while police, fire, and rescue responded with various resources below the bridge and helped pull the woman from the water.

She was transported to the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries from the fall. “There was a great effort on the part of all the responders, who showed great compassion and professionalism during the incident,” police said.
