Wintry mix today with southern St. Lawrence County to see lake-effect snow, NWS warns

A hazardous weather outlook warning has been posted for southern St. Lawrence County as bands of snow off of Lake Ontario are expected to reach the Gouverneur and Star Lake areas.

Precipitation across the North Country will become snow showers then rain and snow showers today, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulations of up to one inch are expected in most of the county today, and perhaps two inches in the south.

The North Country will continue to be influenced by low pressure waves moving in from the west into next week, the NWS says. With colder air filtering in, temperatures will trend cooler, but remain above normal for late January. Scattered snow showers will result in higher terrain with decent accumulation across the mountains. Only minimal snow accumulations are expected in valley locations.

Highs today will be around 38 degrees. Lows tonight will be in the mid-20s, according to the forecast. Winds will be from south and southwest.

Snow showers are expected to continue Friday with two to four inches of accumulation the higher terrain and one to two inches elsewhere.
