Wintry mix forecast has Canton, Potsdam, Gouverneur, O'burg, Massena, Star Lake under hazardous weather outlook

The National Weather Service is warning the area that a hazardous mix of rain and snow could hit St. Lawrence County through Friday.

Meteorologists say there is a 90 percent chance of rain giving way to a rain-snow mix Tuesday night, with temperatures dropping to just below freezing.

The NWS calls 70 percent odds of snow Wednesday, with temperatures possibly rising as high as 37 degrees. Wednesday night brings up to 70 percent odds of rain-snow mix with thermometers dropping to the mid-20s.

Thursday is looking at as high as 80 percent chances of wintry mix with temperatures potentially climbing to 40 degrees. The 80 percent odds of wintry mix continues through the night hours, with temperatures dropping to the high 20s.

The detailed forecast for Potsdam:

Today - A slight chance of showers before 2pm, then a chance of rain between 2pm and 3pm, then a chance of light rain after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tuesday night - Rain before 1am, then rain and snow. Low around 31. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Wednesday - Snow showers before 9am, then rain and snow showers likely. High near 36. Northeast wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Wednesday night - A chance of rain and snow showers before 7pm, then snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Northeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Thursday - Snow and sleet before noon, then rain and sleet between noon and 1pm, then rain after 1pm. High near 39. Northeast wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday night - Rain before 3am, then rain and snow. Low around 29. Southeast wind around 8 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday - Snow showers before 11am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. High near 36. West wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 29. South wind 5 to 8 mph.

Sunday - Partly sunny, with a high near 53. South wind around 10 mph.

Sunday night - A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Monday - A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
