Winter weather advisory in effect through 1 a.m. Thursday in St. Lawrence County with snow, freezing rain likely

A winter weather advisory is in effect for St. Lawrence County through 1 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Forecasters expect mixed precipitation with a dusting to three inches of snow possible. Ice accumulation of up to a tenth of an inch is expected with wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour.

Widespread rain and freezing rain is expected tonight, due to very cold surface temperatures, NWS says.

Plan on snow covered and slippery roads across Northern New York which will impact the morning commute. Meanwhile, rain falling on very cold pavement temperatures will cause hazardous driving conditions areawide late this afternoon into overnight, the service says.

Allow for extra travel time if commuting.

The forecast through next Tuesday is as follows:

Today

Snow before 2pm, then rain, snow, and sleet between 2pm and 3pm, then rain after 3pm. High near 37. South wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Tonight

Rain. Low around 32. Southwest wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday

Rain before 8am, then rain and snow between 8am and 1pm, then snow likely after 1pm. Temperature falling to around 28 by 5pm. Southwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night

A chance of snow before 8pm, then a chance of snow showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind 7 to 9 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Snow showers likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. West wind 7 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
