Snowfall that will begin today is expected to continue through tomorrow night.

A winter weather advisory and hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service predict three to six inches of snow accumulation tonight and tomorrow. The posting is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 a.m. Friday.

The main snowfall is expected to begin late this afternoon.

Toward the Adirondacks, some sleet is expected to be mixed in with the snow.

It will warm on Friday to near 40 degrees. The chance of precipitation drops to around 20 percent, but rises again to around 70 percent Friday night and Saturday, with rain, sleet and snow beginning Friday night and changing to rain.

The chance of rain and snow showers persists through Sunday, according to the NWS.

The forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

Today: Snow likely, mainly after 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 33. East wind between 8 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight: Snow. Low around 27. East wind around 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Thursday: Snow. High near 31. East wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Thursday Night: Occasional snow showers, mainly before 11pm. Low around 21. East wind between 3 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday: A slight chance of snow showers before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Southeast wind between 5 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday Night: A chance of rain showers, snow showers, and sleet before 10pm, then rain showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 33. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy and breezy, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
