OGDENSBURG -- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s third annual St. Lawrence River Dragon Boat Challenge drew 17 teams for races on the St. Lawrence River.

The Kelly Farm team took first place for the second year in a row, Team 95.3 The Wolf took second place, and St. Lawrence Surgery’s Shockable Rhythm took third place.

The event was hosted by Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and sponsored, in part, by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. An after-party was sponsored by 95.3 The Wolf. Special thanks to our in kind sponsors WWNY, Yes FM, Pepsi Cola Bottlers of Ogdensburg, and KT Power.

Seventeen teams competed this year including representatives from many area healthcare institutions such as United Helpers, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Massena Memorial Hospital, and River Hospital. There were corporate and community-based teams as well as six teams from Claxton-Hepburn. Adding to this year’s event were two teams from Hope Chest of Buffalo. Both teams were breast cancer survivors.

The event drew over 1,000 people to Waddington Beach. Local vendors provided food for the crowd and many of the teams traveling stayed in local hotels and campgrounds helping to generate revenue for the community.

“For the third year running, we are pleased at the success Dragon Boat Race. Waddington Beach is the perfect place for the event,” said Claxton-Hepburn President and CEO Nate Howell.

“With the heavy rain and storms on Friday before the race, we were worried about the Saturday turnout. But with thanks to the Town of Waddington, and the efforts of the professionals at Dynamic Dragon Boat Racing, our community relations staff, and our group of hardy volunteers were able to pull it off,” Howell said

“This year’s races were more competitive than ever. Not only did we have two boats of breast cancer survivors, I also noted members of other important community organizations integrated into existing teams, including teachers and police officers and firefighters. I hope that we might see new boats from these organizations in 2018, that is if they can take the competition,” Howell said.

The 2018 St. Lawrence River Dragon Boat Challenge is tentatively set for July 14.
