Wind chill advisory issued for North Country; temperatures to dip below zero, wind chill may reach 20 to 30 below

A wind chill advisory has been issued for northern St. Lawrence County, including Ogdensburg, Massena, Potsdam, and Gouverneur, as temperatures may dip well below zero.

The advisory for “dangerously cold wind chills” is in effect from 9 p.m. Monday through 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

While snow showers are expected to cease, wind chills may reach as low as 20 to 30 below zero, with baseline temperatures as low as 17 below, the service says.

“A wind chill advisory means that very cold air and moderate winds will combin to generate low wind chills,” which may result “in frostbite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” said NWS.

Precautions include staying indoors or wearing a hat and gloves outside.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the single digits through the week, with milder temperatures possible Friday and into the weekend, according to the service.
