EDWARDS – Six forest rangers and about 50 firefighters from six area fire departments were called out at mid-day Sunday to fight a wildfire started by a resident burning garbage.
By the time firefighters left at about 8 p.m., about 68 acres had burned, according to the DEC.
No loss of buildings or injuries were reported.
DEC rangers were out again today to look for hot spots.
The resident, at 28 Ames Road, was issued tickets for violating the state open burning ban, which remains in effect through today, and for burning garbage.
Edwards Fire Chief Richard Anson said his department was called out at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday. They were followed quickly by Gouverneur, Harrisville, Hermon, DeKalb Junction, and Richvile companies. Star Lake firefighters covered at Russell and Edwards stations, Anson said.
He said this afternoon that rangers were back at the scene, “just finishing up, making sure there are no hot spots” that could flare up again.
The DEC said the fire is under investigation.
