Wheathouse Bay in Ogdensburg open for ice fishing

OGDENSBURG – The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority has opened Wheathouse Bay for ice fishing this winter.

Authority Executive Director Wade Davis said ice fishing on the bay is open “effective immediately for the winter through March 15, 2013.”

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recommends at least four inches of solid ice for safe ice fishing.

“The site offers a unique winter experience for ice anglers throughout the North Country which nicely compliments the St. Lawrence River Valley’s FISHCAP program,” Davis said.

According to FISHCAP, “Wheathouse Bay is recognized as one of the best ice fishing locations along the entire St. Lawrence River.”

Wheathouse Bay offers quality fishing for many species including perch, sunfish, pickerel, northern pike and walleye, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Users are reminded to access the site through the authority’s New Port Access Road at the lighted intersection at Ford and Barre Streets. They also ask people to be aware of increased port traffic, and to use the site responsibly at their own risk.
