STOCKHOLM – The Stockholm man who told police he allegedly buried at least one body of an elderly couple was jailed on welfare fraud charges on March 31, according to state police.
Robert A. Bartlett Jr., 42, was charged with third-degree welfare fraud and three counts of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, all felonies, troopers said.
The charges stem from an investigation where Bartlett was found to have collected welfare benefits belonging to Alvin S. Babcock and Betty D. Babcock, of 733 May Road in Stockholm, who were found to be deceased, officers said.
Last week state police investigators located the remains of the couple buried in the yard at their May Road address. The cause and manner of their deaths is still under investigation.
Bartlett was arraigned at the Town of Fowler Court and sent to the St. Lawrence County Jail on $20,000 bail or $40,000 bond.
