Increasing winds today, low humidity, and the usual spring accumulation of dry fuels has prompted the National Weather Service to post a “red flag” fire warning until 7 p.m. for northern and southeastern sections of St. Lawrence County.
This warning is beyond the usual spring outdoor fire bans due to extra risk of fires starting and spreading in these conditions.
The weather forecasters said that relative humidity will be lowest and the winds strongest between 1 and 5 p.m. today.
Southwest winds will be breezy at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Humidity is low at 20 to 30 percent.
“Given the expected weather conditions any fires that do occur today will likely spread quickly, burn intensely, and be difficult to contain,” the NWS alert said.
Sections of St. Lawrence County were added to the alerts before 11 a.m. today after being posted for other sections of the North Country earlier today.
The NWS says there is a chance of showers in St. Lawrence County tonight.
