POTSDAM -- With Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8, cable channel 30, WCKN, is airing all of the voter education programming it has recorded this season on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6.

There are two new video airing this weekend, in addition to the others that were taped in the last few weeks. Potsdam Village trustee candidate Ron Tischler spoke with Potsdam’s Bob Burns and Sue Rice to discuss the issues surrounding the race for a final Conversation with Candidates.

Potsdam Village Administrator David Fenton also spoke with Burns, a retired village administrator and former village trustee, to examine how services might be shared between the town and village, from the village perspective, as outlined in the alternatives to dissolution section of the formal report by the Dissolution Committee.

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and repeating on Sunday at the same times, are the Alternatives to Dissolution show with Bob Burns and Michele Arnold and Alex Jacobs of the Dissolution Study Committee, followed by the town shared services program with Potsdam Town Supervisor Marie Regan, and then the conversation with David Fenton.

The Conversations with Candidates programs begin at 1 p.m. The first two feature the candidates for St. Lawrence County Clerk, Gavin Regan and Mary Lou Rupp, followed at 2 p.m. by St. Lawrence County Family Court Judge candidates Cecily Morris and Andrew Moses.

Village of Potsdam Conversations with Candidates will start at 3 p.m. Mayoral candidate Steve Yurgartis will be followed by trustee candidates Eleanor Hopke, Mark Lee and Ron Tischler.

Also running for office in the village of Potsdam this year are Sharon Hutchinson for mayor, and Joe Goliber and Dick Hutchinson for trustee. Although all the candidates were given the same opportunity to participate in the Conversations project, some declined the offer or had scheduling conflicts.

In addition, each of these shows is available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/danieledullea.

Check the websites for AAUW-St. Lawrence County (http://www.northnet.org/stlawrenceaauw/index.html) and the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County (http://slc-leaguewv.org/) for specific program links.

The civic partners who have produced these programs for the Conversations and the Dissolution series include AAUW-St. Lawrence County, the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County, the Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University, Clarkson students in Comm. 310 and 327, and the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce.

The civic partners are especially grateful to the students who did the filming and made the air time available on WCKN for their dedication and participation to this project and to their advisor, Dan Dullea, who devoted many additional hours to this project above and beyond class time. This community-based project in civic and civil participation in government is an example of how voter education can and should work.
