California stuntman “Mad Mike” Hughes recently made headlines after announcing he will attempt to jump the St. Lawrence River in Morrisburg, Ontario, which is across the pond from Ogdensburg.
He is not the first to attempt the feat.
In 1976, stuntman Kenny Powers tried the jump near where Hughes intends to do his.
Powers’ attempt involved putting rocket engines and wings on a Lincoln Continental, which according to automobile-catalog.com, weighed upwards of 5,000 lbs. before the modifications were added.
He failed, making it only yards over the waterline and broke his back in the process.
