Warm weather likely to bring thunderstorms tonight, possibly on July 4 holiday

High pressure is building into the North Country today, but strong thunderstorms are possible overnight through Wednesday, Independence Day, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms, some of which could drop half an inch of rain, will clear out from west to east Wednesday night, with a dry forecast for Thursday and Friday, with a slight chance of rain Saturday.

Temperatures will be a bit above normal through Friday followed by a the start of a trend back toward normal for the weekend.

By Sunday and Monday, predicted high temps will be back to about 80 degrees.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

This Afternoon: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. West wind around 8 mph.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 2am and 3am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 65. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Independence Day: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11a.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 p.m. Mostly clear, with a low around 64. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 84. North wind 5 to 7 mph.

Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 60.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 88.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 59.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 55.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81.
