Wait times at Ogdensburg, Massena crossings into Canada could mount during Canadian Thanksgiving weekend Oct. 11-14

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is anticipating heavy traffic volumes at the St. Lawrence River ports of entry from Massena to Cornwall and Ogdensburg to Prescott this weekend, the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend.

The CBSA warns travelers that traffic will make it worthwhile to plan their border crossings to avoid delays.

They advise travelers to plan their border crossings outside of peak traffic periods if possible and to check border wait times on the CBSA’s Web site, http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/, or on Twitter, http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/new-neuf/twitter-eng.html.

In anticipation of higher traffic volumes CBSA notes they expect potential for delays for particular dates and times when entering Canada:

• Prescott port of entry (@CBSA_PCT), peak traffic volumes are anticipated between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, and between noon and 10 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, when border wait times may exceed 60 minutes.

• Cornwall port of entry (@CBSA_CWL), peak traffic volumes are anticipated to be between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, and between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, when border wait times may exceed 60 minutes.

Travelers can also help speed up processing by ensuring that they have proper identification for everyone readily available upon arrival at the primary inspection booth and have receipts for purchases in hand.

The CBSA advises all travelers to truthfully declare all purchases when returning to Canada and to be mindful of the following: after an absence of 24 hours, you may bring back $200 worth of goods duty- and tax-free; after 48 hours, your personal exemption is $800. There are no personal exemptions for same-day purchases.

Please refer to the I Declare brochure on the CBSA Web site at http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5056-eng.html for more information.
