Waddington man’s ‘owl vs. deer’ shot wins big in trail camera photo contest

CANTON — The people have spoken, and they really like a trail camera photograph that shows an owl apparently hot on the trail of a deer.

The incredible photograph, submitted to the Nature Up North/St. Lawrence County Chamber contest by Kevin Dunkelberg of Waddington, was snapped by a game trail camera this past October. Voters on Facebook chose it the best overall picture by a margin of more than two-to-one.

Dunkelberg will receive the contest’s first prize, a Bushnell Trophy Cam HD.

Placing second in the Best Overall category was a bald eagle and ravens photo submitted by John Bates of Canton; a bobcat photo from William Leary of Ogdensburg placed third; and a shot of deer and turkeys from Lee Hill of Waddington placed fourth.

In the Funny-or-Fascinating category, a coyote racing through the night with a haunch of deer placed first; it won Walter Willard of Heuvelton a Kunoco Food Marts gift certificate.

Second place in that category was a picture of a deer eating an apple, submitted by Marc Peccolo of Ogdensburg; third place was won by Jane Phelps of Edwards, who submitted a photo of a bear sucking its toes.

Second, third and fourth place winners will receive Nature Up North and St. Lawrence County Chamber apparel.

The first ever Trail Camera Photo Contest drew more than 100 entries, and showed what the county’s wild animals — from bobcats to turkeys — are up to when humans aren’t around. To see all the submissions, visitnatureupnorth.org/encounters.

Wildlife enthusiasts and hunters alike are encouraged to submit trail camera shots, or any other North Country nature photos, year-round to the Nature Up North website.

It is expected that another trail camera photo contest will take place in late fall 2015.
