Waddington gets Senate recognition for ‘Fishing Town’ quest

Posted

We don't know how Sullivan County rival Roscoe feels about it, but Sen. Patty Ritchie says the Senate has voted to commend the St. Lawrence County village of Waddington in its campaign to become the national ultimate fishing town.

And Congressman Bill Owens is urging people to put Waddington at the top by the time voting ends next week.

There has been a see-saw race between Roscoe and Waddington since voting began for the World Fishing Network's web contest to declare the Ultimate Fishing Town USA.

Roscoe and Waddington remain one and two in voting across the country for the title, a $25,000 top prize, and production of a TV spot.

Tuesday at mid-day, Waddington was at more than 126,000 votes -- more than 124 times the village's population. Roscoe was about 1,000 votes ahead.

Since voting began in April, the two New York state localities have led all other contenders across the USA by a wide margin. During the preliminary round, Waddington was the clear leader. Now in the final round, with only seven days left, Roscoe has maintained a slim lead for several days.

Alicia Murphy of the Waddington Chamber of Commerce has been driving the St. Lawrence River community's entry, and is asking more people to sign up for proxy voting if the voters can't make the most of voting opportunities themselves.

Proxy voting, where other people vote for you when you cannot, is allowable and is being done by both Waddington and Roscoe.

A message from the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce explains how it’s done:

First time voters need to follow a set of directions.

1. Go to http://www.wfnfishingtown.com/town/waddington-ny and cast a vote for Waddington.

2. Individuals will then receive an e-mail from WFN to verify their e-mail vote – and must respond to the WFN by clicking on the link.

3. This process must be repeated for every e-mail account an individual has.

4. Votes may be cast every six hours until May 31, the last day of voting.

Once the initial vote and verification are done, anyone who wants votes cast by proxy can send an email, specifically giving the Waddington Chamber of Commerce permission to vote on their behalf, to waddingtonchamber@gmail.com. Include your name.

The resolution that passed the Senate did not endorse Waddington over Roscoe, but it did commend Waddington for finishing in first place in the preliminary round.

"As we enter the final week of the competition, I need all of my friends across Central and northern New York to join me in helping Waddington," Ritchie said. "It's time to end upstate New York's status as North America's best kept secret. If we work together, we can spur tourism, help our economy, put our region on the map and make people aware that the St. Lawrence River is one of the greatest places in America to visit and vacation."
