WADDINGTON -- Voting in the Ultimate Fishing Town contest ends at 6 p.m. tonight, and Waddington, lingering in second place, seems to have little chance of overcoming their deficit.
This morning, Olcott, N.Y., a town on Lake Ontario, had amassed 132,000 votes, compared with Waddington's nearly 78,000. That's 6,000 more votes than yesterday morning for Olcott, and 3,000 more for Waddington.
Earlier this month, Waddington was in first place. Waddington finished second in last year's online contest from the World Fishing Network and has hopes of taking first place this year. The second place prize of $5,000 last year was largely contributed to organizations that enjoy and promote fishing in the area, including the Waddington Fish and Game Club, FISHCAP, the St. Lawrence River Walleye Association, and the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsmen’s Club.
The first-place prize is a $25,000 community donation to be used for fishing related causes and promotion in the winning town. A television feature about the winning town will be produced and broadcast on the World Fishing Network, WFN. And WFN will visit the winning town for a check presentation and media event.
Voting closes at 6 p.m. tonight.
Supporters can go to http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/uft/home.php and vote four times per six-hour period, once between midnight and 6 a.m., 6 a.m. to noon, noon to 6 p.m. today.
