POTSDAM – Voting in an online video contest for Lawrence Avenue Elementary School’s entry can be a tribute to a music teacher who recently passed away.

Voting closes Thursday evening.

Musician Red Grammer, who has performed at Potsdam schools, is sponsoring the contest and offering the prize of an all-day visit to the winning school, including a daytime school concert, three daytime "informances," and an evening concert for the whole school community.

The theme of the contest is “I Am a Bucket Filler,” after one of Grammer’s songs. He has invited schools to send videos of a classroom of kids, a school chorus or a whole school.

The deadline for sending videos has passed, but voting continues through 8 p.m. Thursday. So far, the videos page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Grammer/412289435495620?sk=videos&ref=page_internal seems to show Lawrence Avenue’s entry in the lead.

Larry Jenne, who recently retired as the school’s principal, is asking people to vote for the school's video to honor late music teacher Catherine Frick, who died July 1 at the age of 45.

Frick led school kids in a rendition of the song and entered the video in the contest.

“It is one of the fondest memories I have of Cathy - her teaching our students Red's songs and the joy they brought to us all,” wrote Larry Jenne, who recently retired as elementary school principal at Lawrence Avenue.

“It would mean the world to those of us who knew and loved Cathy and want to preserve her memory in any way we can,” said Jenne in an email message. “We need some likes so we can honor our colleague and carry on in her memory in the most amazing way possible.”

In addition to teaching music at the elementary school, Frick was superintendent of the Potsdam United Methodist Church Sunday School program for many years, and was a member of the Potsdam Community Band, and also conducted orchestra for the “Secret Garden” performances.

People may vote by “liking” a video on the contest Facebook page at contest page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Grammer/412289435495620?sk=videos&ref=page_internal.

Grammer has been described by Parent’s Magazine as “the best voice in children’s music.”
