OGDENSBURG -- The United Helpers Orphanage will be on the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 ornament, voters at the Boys and Girls Club Expo decided.

The orphanage has been voted this year’s winner with 72 votes. Coming in second was Claxton-Hepburn Memorial Hospital with 51 votes. The Robert McEwen Customs House came in third with 41 votes.

In 1898, 10 St. Lawrence County women met to address a pressing social need, orphaned and indigent children. They each invested $100 to form the Society of United Helpers and created a safe haven that helped to house and keep hundreds of area children safe and nurtured. The first United Helpers Orphans’ Home was on Congress Street in Ogdensburg and later re-located to a larger facility on State Street, where the Edgar E. Newell Golden Dome stands today. The United Helpers Orphans’ Home closed in 1958.

The popular ornament collection now includes: 2005 Lighthouse Point (sold out), 2006 Spirit of Liberty, Soldiers & Sailors Monument, 2007 Remington Art Museum (sold out), 2008 NYS Armory, 2009 Ogdensburg City Hall, 2010 Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, 2011 The Old Arsenal, 2012 Ogdensburg Public Library, 2013 The Bishop’s Residence; 2014 Abbe Picquet Monument; 2015 US Post Office and 2016 General Curtis ornament. The 2017 ornament will be available in the fall.
