Voters to decide Tuesday on local offices, county board, congress, state reps

Voters on Tuesday, Nov. 6 will vote for county legislature candidates for all 15 St. Lawrence County districts, as well as many local offices, plus all seven state assembly members and senators that represent the county.

Voters will also choose a new congressional representative for the North Country.

Contested local races include Ogdensburg justice. The candidates are Democrat Marcia LeMay and Republican incumbent Gary Alford.

In Massena, Democratic incumbent Melanie Cunningham is running for Town Council against independent Carl Zender.

In Potsdam, voters will choose between Democrat incumbent Samuel Charleston and Republican Kenneth "Juddy" Plumb for town justice. Also in Potsdam, Democrat Toni Kennedy and Republican Larry Colbert are both seeking a term as town councilor.

In Dekalb, voters will choose between Democrat Andrew Fenton and Republican Constance J. Elen for town councilor. In Edwards, Republican Jeffrey Shippee is running against independent Frank E. Wagner Jr. for town councilor. Gouverneur voters will pick two trustees from candidates Charles W. Newvine (Democrat, Republican), Donna M. Lawrence (Democrat) and Troy Besaw (Republican). In Hermon, Democrat Frank D. Ashley and Republican John A. Reed are running for a seat on the Town Council.

Democrat Debra Pearl and Republican Stephen Bory are running for a town justice position in Hopkinton.

There are nine contested races for county legislature.

In District 2, which includes Lisbon and the eastern part of Ogdensburg, Democrat Sam LaMacchia is facing Republican incumbent David Forsythe. 
In District 3, which includes Morristown and Oswegatchie, plus the northwest part of the Town of Canton, Republican incumbent Joseph Lightfoot is facing Democrat Michael Hammond.

District 4 includes the towns of Edwards, Fowler, Hammond, Macomb, Pitcairn and Rossie. The candidates are Democrat Barbara Finnie and Republican William Sheridan.

In District 7, which covers the towns of Pierrepont, Calre, Colton, Hopkinton, Parishville and Piercefield, voters will choose between Democrat incumbent Rick Perkins and Republican Kevin Beary.

District 8 includes the Town of Madrid, the southern and eastern part of the Town of Canton and the western portion of the Town of Potsdam. The candidates there are Republican incumbent Kevin Acres and Democrat Kaitlin Tyndall.

District 10, which includes most of the Village of Potsdam, plus small portions of the surrounding town, has Democrat Dave Haggard running against Republican Nicholas Pignone.

District 11 includes the portion of the Potsdam village not included in District 10, plus the southeast portion of the Town of Potsdam and the entire Town of Stockholm. The candidates are Republican incumbent Chad Colbert and Democrat Nance Arquiett.

There is a three-way race for the 14th District, which is most of the Village of Massena south of the Grasse River and the eastern part of the village on the north side of the river. The candidates are Democrat Nicole Terminelli, Republican Joel Grigg and Conservative Jim Hidy.

The 15th District includes the northwest portion of the Village of Massena, plus the towns of Waddington and Louisville. Democrat Shawna Cecot is running against Republican Rita Curran.

There is also a three-way race for St. Lawrence County coroner. Voters will pick two from a three-way pool of Democrat James Sienkiewwycz and Republicans Joseph White and Christopher Velez.

In contested Assembly races, Democrat incumbent Addie Jenne is facing a challenge from Republican Mark Walczyk in the 116th District. The so-called "River District," it includes all St. Lawrence County communities along the St. Lawrence River, plus Canton, Potsdam, Rossie, Macomb and Depeyster. It extends west into parts of Jefferson County, including Watertown.

In the 118th District, Democrat Keith Rubino is running against Republican Robert Smullen. The district includes Madrid, Norfolk, Stockholm, Parishville, Pierrepont, Clare, Colton, Clifton and Fine. It also covers Hamilton, Herkimer and Fulton counties, plus parts of Oneida County.

The only contested state Senate race in St. Lawrence County is the 45th District. Republican incumbent Betty Little is running against Democrat Emily Martz. It includes Parishville, Lawrence, Clare, Colton, Hopkinton and Piercefield. It extends east and south into Franklin, Clinton, Essex, Warren and Washington counties.

For Congress, Democrat Tedra Cobb of Canton is running against Republican incumbent Elise Stefanik and Lynn Kahn on the Green Party tick
