ST. REGIS FALLS -- Azure Mountain Friends are looking for some hikers who would be interested in volunteering for a weekend day as a summit steward during the summer/fall season.
Azure Mountain, located south of St Regis Falls, offers a historic fire tower and spectacular views from its 2518-foot summit. 2017 will mark the 15th year of the AMF Volunteer Summit Steward Program, which runs each season from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day.
During that time, the Azure Mountain Friends hope to have a volunteer steward on the summit of Azure Mountain on each weekend day and holiday.
Climbing this remote Adirondack peak has been popular with families and individuals for many generations.
While on top, our volunteer stewards greet fellow hikers, hand out observer’s cards, and fly the American flag from the tower.
They answer questions relating to the history of the tower, help hikers identify major landmarks such as Mt Marcy, St Regis Mountain and Lake Ozonia, and pick up any litter at the end of the day.
There are also ample opportunities to kick back, relax, and take in the view as well.
If you enjoy outdoor adventures and meeting people, and if you can volunteer a day or two on a weekend this summer or early fall, contact Joe Berner, AMF Chair, at azurehiker@yahoo.com, or at 315-265-3184.
Additional details on what is involved with becoming an Azure Mountain Volunteer Summit Steward can be found on the website at www.azuremountain.org.
