CANTON – The general $10 parking fine in the village may be going up.
The village board here began discussing a fine increase at their Sept. 25 meeting.
Parking violations in Canton currently result in a $10 fine, but trustees, with advice from Canton Chief of Police James Santimaw, are mulling a hike to $25.
This amount is closer on average to what other municipalities in St. Lawrence County currently charge for violations. Fines in these other communities do vary depending on the type of parking violation, but are generally higher than the $10 fine in Canton.
Errant parkers can be ticketed and fined $10 for pulling their vehicles onto the grass between sidewalks and the roadway, jumping curbs, or for parking on lawns, in front of driveways, or in other prohibited parking zones, for double parking, parking over a time limit, diagonal parking, parking contrary to traffic. Fines of $15 are doled out vehicle owners who park within a fire lane and within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. Violating a handicapped parking area can result in a $50 fine.
A public hearing on the proposal to increase the fine was set by the village board for Oct. 16 at 5:45 p.m.
