POTSDAM -- The U.S. Department of Defense recently recognized a SUNY Potsdam faculty member with the Patriot Award.

Joe Timmerman, chair of the Department of Business Administration, was presented with the Department of Defense Patriot Award, in recognition of his strong support for members of the National Guard and Reserve.

Associate Professor of Business Administration Gregory Gardner, who is also a Colonel in the National Guard, nominated Timmerman for the award.

"I nominated Joe and SUNY Potsdam for this award in recognition of the great personal and institutional support I received during my last two deployments, and all the other times when military duties have caused me to be away. My colleagues have always had my back, covering classes and advising and providing moral support while I am away," Gardner said.

Col. William Murphy, the regional coordinator for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program, presented the Patriot Award to Timmerman in a special ceremony held on campus in December. The retired colonel also recognized the other members of the College's business administration department, who go above and beyond to support Gardner's service.

Following the ceremony, the group gathered for a photo.
