MASSENA -- A two-nation search for the source of a distress call on the St. Lawrence River between Massena and Ogdensburg was called off around 1:30 this afternoon, according to St. Lawrence County Emergency Services Director Michael LeCuyer.
“It appears at this time it’s unfounded,” LeCuyer said. “Hopefully it’ll remain that way.”
He said responders found no evidence of a missing boat.
No one knows who made the call or why, he added.
U.S. and Canadian authorities were looking for the source.
"We had an adult male come over (radio) ... said 'help' and didn't give any further information," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class James Bordeleau. "We heard the call at 9:37 a.m."
He says New York State Police searched the area with a helicopter. U.S. Border Patrol and Canadian Border Services Agency also took part.
Jim Chestnut of St. Lawrence County Emergency Services said local first responders also joined in.
"We don't know if this is someone playing a prank or what the case may be," Chestnut said late Monday morning.
