MASSENA -- The fifth Upstate Comic Con raised $320 for the Massena Rescue Squad and drew 129 attendees.
The event was Sept. 23 at Louisville Arena.
“We were excited to go over 100 attendees given the fact that there were so many events going on throughout the Seaway Valley and the weather we had that day,” event organizer Elijah Winfrey said in an email. “For a lot of our attendees this is their first comic book convention that they have ever attended and that is a really cool feeling when you hear that and see just how happy they are with what they see here.”
He said the event brings him slightly closer to a goal he has set for himself - to raise $10,000 for local charities by age 25.
Now 23, he says he is up to $6,837.53.
Since 2014, he has assisted the Boys and Girls Club of Massena, causes devoted to raising autism awareness and fighting pediatric cancer and the rescue squad.
Event organizers are already planning next year’s event, Winfrey said, in addition to a 2018 horror convention.
“We are planning to bring this event back to Massena where it all began and are currently working on the next charity we will be supporting,” Winfrey said in the email.
