OGDENSBURG -- A rise in the number of unlicensed dogs has prompted the Ogdensburg City Council to consider a $10 late fee on for dog licenses that are not renewed.
Monday councilors are expected to set a March 9 public hearing to gather public input on the proposal
According to information provided by the City Clerk the city has had 275 unlicensed dogs in the last five years, with 108 in 2014 alone.
The proposal would establish a $10 late fee if a dog license is not renewed within 60 days of the license expiration date. If approved, the ordinance would take effect June 1.
According to the resolution, dog license fees will be reviewed by the city council periodically and may be changed by a resolution of the council, if deemed necessary.
The resolution to call for a public hearing will be brought up at the next city council meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
