MALONE -- One person was injured when a tractor trailer and farm trailer collided and caught fire this morning, according to witnesses and state police.
The vehicles collided around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday on state Route 11B between Meehan Road and Limekiln Road, which was closed for part of the day.
A 2015 Kenworth semi-trailer driven by Carl P. Bull, 67 of Bristol, Vt. was traveling east bound on state Route 11B when he struck the rear of a 1987 John Deere farm tractor operated by Michael A. Allen, 25 of Bangor, who was pulling a trailer full of manure, troopers said.
Bull then drove onto the north shoulder of the roadway, striking the guide rail, where the truck came to rest. The semi leaked about 250 gallons of fuel oil onto the ground. The trailer, which was carrying 32 tons of grain, ruptured and spilled onto the roadway.
Bull sustained minor head lacerations and reported an ankle injury. He was transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center, Malone. Allen was not injured, troopers said.
A witness, who did not want to be identified, said they believed there may have been an explosion.
"It was so powerful I thought someone drove into my house," the witness said.
State police Troop B public information officer Jennifer Fleishman said investigators at the scene believe the sounds the witness heard may have been tires exploding from the heat of the fire.
