LISBON – Lisbon Beach and Campground has a new playground thanks to the efforts of a Lisbon Central School teacher and several unions.
A grand opening was help recently, which allowed students in the afterschool program to try out the new equipment.
Julie Rexford wrote the grant, which provided $44,0000 to replace the aged playground equipment at the beach.
The funding was provided by the People Project, which fosters collaboration between unions to improve communities.
“We owe a huge debt to two men who worked tireless and donated not only their own time, but their heavy equipment and their crews. Without them we would never have been able to construct the playgrounds,” she said.
Dave Bishop, owner of Bishop Construction, did all of the excavation work for the installation and Highway Superintendent Mike Baldock, of Baldock excavation did all the back and finishing work.
Rexford also credited Scott Kiah and Travis Perkins, who work for the town, for their help in building the playground.
Unions who collaborated on the project included the Lisbon Teacher’s Association, Lisbon Non-instructional Staff, CSEA – Lisbon Highway Department, Massena Teachers’ Association, Heuvelton Teachers’ Association, IBEW local 910, St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES Federation of instructional support personnel, NYSCOPBA, United Steelworkers local #1026.
