WADDINGTON -- Two people were treated for smoke inhalation after a Friday morning fire caused “very extensive damage” to a Pork Steet home, according to Waddington’s fire chief.
Chief Micheal LeClair said firefighters were dispatched at 5:09 a.m. to 149 Pork St.
“It came over as an entrapment, but they (residents) both got out before we arrived on scene,” he said, adding that a woman and a man resided at the home, but he did not have their names.
The chief said the woman was able to get out, but the man couldn’t. Their son, who lives close by, came and helped him escape, LeClair said.
He said firefighters upon arrival noticed “very heavy smoke, no flames.”
“I sent a couple interior guys in the front … two out back and we dampened the house and after about an hour 45 minutes we got the fire contained,” LeClair said.
They had to rip out ceilings and floors throughout the structure to get at the source, which combined with the fire itself, caused “very extensive damage.”
He said he is not sure if the structure will be considered a total loss; investigators would make that determination.
“We did a hell of a save because the whole outside of the house is not touched,” according to LeClair.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
