Two SUNY Potsdam DJs seek to break Guinness record for longest continuous broadcast

POTSDAM -- Two DJs at SUNY Potsdam’s radio station want to break a Guinness record for longest uninterrupted music broadcast by a two-person team, and they are asking for witnesses.

The station manager at 90.3fm WAIH The Way, Margaret Weis, and public relations director Zaivy Luke-Aleman, are planning to stay on the air for 105 hours, to break the 100-hour record held by a Belgian radio station since last February. And, Luke-Aleman says, they will go longer than 105 hours if they can.

That’s more than four days straight.

“We want to see how far we can go, but if we were to break the record at a minimum, we would need to fill in 26 time slots of independent witnesses,” which Guinness would require for verification.

“Each time slot would be four hours long with two witnesses present. To meet our minimum goal we would need 52 people if each did only one shift, 26 people if each did two shifts, and 13 people if each did three shifts,” she said. “But again, this is our endurance attempt, so ideally we would need more people.”

Shifts cannot be done back to back by the same individuals; food and drink will be provided for volunteers.

“We would ask the people in our school to help except that they cannot be witnesses because witnesses need to be independent of us in order for Guinness to accept our evidence of having broken the record. Not only that, but witnesses have to also be independent of each other. Other than that, all others are welcome to help out, so please do!”

They have yet to decide on the date for the marathon, but they are focusing on dates from March 4 to 14 or April 8 to 13 during school recesses.

Potential volunteers can contact Luke-Aleman at lukealz197@potsdam.edu or at her office on the second floor of the college’s Barrington Student Union during her office hours, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. People should leave their names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses, and she will contact them with more information.
