CANTON – Two SUNY Canton students have been charged with the theft of a van after they crashed it into a utility pole and left.

Early on April 4, Michael L. Moolick, 23, Schenectady, and Frederick del Prete, 21, Ontario, N.Y., left the Hoot Owl bar in Canton and stole a Servicemaster van, according to St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies.

The two drove out of the village on State Rt. 68, and failed to complete the turn onto the Irish Settlement Road, hitting and snapping the pole, deputies said.

When the van would go no further, Moolick and Del Prete allegedly fled.

Local residents called the Sheriff’s Office, which sent patrols to investigate. They were joined by the Canton police and fire department.

Deputies charged both men with third-degree grand larceny, a Class D felony, for the alleged theft of the van.

Moolick was also charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief for the damage the pole.

After arraignment, both men were released to the supervision of the county Probation Department.

The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.
