A group of snowmobilers was running along the trail near Eel Wier State Park and decided to take a shortcut across the river near the bridge on Spile Bridge Road.
Eric Matheson, 21, 3954CR 10, Depeyster, was the first to go through the ice, while the rest of his group of about half a dozen riders went on to keep going through the ice themselves.
Logan Gagne, 22, 803 East Rd., Heuvelton, went back to help Matheson and went through the ice himself.
St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office received a call for help at about 10 p.m. and went to the scene. They were aided there by state police and border patrol officers, along with Heuvelton, Ogdensburg, and Lisbon fire and rescue volunteers.
Deputies report no injuries.
