MASSENA -- Two Potsdam men were jailed on Jan. 26 on felony weapon charges after an apparent robbery attempt.
Kurt M. Covey, 24, of 6808 State Hwy. 56 is charged with third-degree criminal possession, a felony and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon: intent to use, a misdemeanor.
Kyle. E. Kain, 21, of 5799 State Hwy. 56 is charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.
Each was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald Sharlow and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond. He also put an order of protection in place ordering that the pair has no contact with Jessica L. Schober.
The weapon charges stem from the pair being found in possession of 20-round ammo clips.
Court documents state that the pair was arrested following police investigating a suspicious vehicle on East Hatfield Street.
Police had stopped Schober, who told them that the pair was in Massena to buy drugs and had gotten out of the car with masks and rifles and had talked about robbing someone, she told police in a statement.
Police found Kain on Leach Street, arrested him after a brief struggle and found a white mask similar to the one worn by the killer in the horror movie “Scream.”
Covey was arrested nearby, and police said they found a red devil mask near where he was apprehended.
A search of the nearby area yielded a Norinco SKS7 7.62x.39 rifle and a Savage .22-caliber rifle, court documents said.
Kain and Covey are each scheduled for preliminary hearings on Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in Massena court.
