CANTON -- Two more St. Lawrence County prosecutors have resigned, leaving the department with just five remaining assistant district attorneys.

David Park and Matthew Hogestyn have both resigned their positions as assistant district attorneys.

This is the third prosecutor to leave the office in the past month. The office, which has already struggled to maintain staffing levels, is now operating with just five assistant district attorneys.

Just weeks prior to these resignations, Jonathan Jirik left the office after he practiced a felony case without proper certification.

Paul Smith, director of human resources at the county, said he believed the letters of resignation were filed with the District Attorney’s Office Friday. However several phone calls and emails sent Friday to the DA’s office, St. Lawrence County Administrator Ruth Doyle and HR Director Smith were not returned.

The resignations come in the wake of a driving while intoxicated charge against David Park, 25, of Potsdam.

State police say they pulled over Park for inadequate taillights while he was traveling north on Market Street and detected the smell of alcoholic beverage emanating from him.

Park failed field sobriety tests on the roadside and was arrested for drunk driving, troopers said. Troopers say Park had a blood alcohol content of .11 percent.

Park was also cited for operating a motor vehicle without taillights and moving from lane unsafely.

The county did not provide details on why the two ADAs filed the resignations. But, Potsdam Police say they responded to a Market Street residence where Park had been present at around 3:04 a.m. Friday morning. Police apparently assisted those present with a malfunctioning door.

Police said those present at the residence appeared to be intoxicated, but told police they did not intend to leave the premises.

Further details were not available.
