MASSENA -- Village police say two people are jailed on a combined total of 22 counts, including 14 felonies, for alleged fraudulent check-cashing and debit card withdrawals.
Angelina L. Hughes, 29, of 51 North Main St. is charged with seven felony counts of second-degree forgery, two felony counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny, police said.
Steven A. Gardner, 29, of 15 East Ave., Massena is charged with five counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and six counts of petit larceny, police said.
The pair allegedly forged Dawn Monroe’s name on multiple checks and allegedly used her debit card without permission to withdraw cash. She is Gardner’s mother, with whom the pair were living at the time, according to documents filed with Massena Village Court.
Hughes is charged with forging seven checks totaling $1,020 in February. She is also accused of forging Monroe’s name on two checks totaling $350 in March, according to court documents.
Gardner allegedly forged five checks totaling $670. He also allegedly withdrew $100 from Monroe’s debit card, court documents said.
Both Hughes and Gardner were picked up at 9:38 p.m. Saturday on Parker Avenue, police said.
They were arraigned in Massena Village Court by Justice Eric Gustafson and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, Canton, in lieu of $2,500 bail or $5,000 bail apiece, according to police.
