MASSENA -- Two St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation employees were recently honored by the U.S. Department of Transportation for their quick work in extinguishing a fire on a tugboat they were piloting in December.

Randy Gilmer and Nate Jarvis received the USDOT's Transportation Safety Award.

A release from the SLSDC says they were honored in recognition of their quickly dealing with a life-threatening situation when the boat's engine room caught fire.

“The decisive and extraordinary action they took last December to extinguish a fire

on the SLSDC’s tug, Robinson Bay, in dreadful winter weather conditions was heroic, to say the least, and instrumental in preventing a catastrophe aboard the vessel," U.S. Transportation Secretery Anthony Foxx said in a prepared statement.

Other Massena-based SLSDC employees awarded by the USDOT include Craig Middlebrook, Carol Fenton, Thomas Lavigne, Lori Curran, Chris Guimond and Carrie Lavigne. They comprise the seaway's 2013 navigation season closing team.

The USDOT says they were honored "for their outstanding collaboration, communication and leadership during the extremely challenging circumstances faced at the closing of the 2013 seaway navigation season. The challenges faced during last season’s closing far exceeded any other closing in seaway history."
