OGDENSBURG — Two cats died and two people are temporarily homeless following a fire at 417 Belmont Courts Thursday night, according to Ogdensburg Fire Captain Chuck Irvine.
The fire was reported at 3:34 p.m. and firemen were on scene within minutes, Irvine said.
The blaze started on a stove that had been left on, he said.
Fire damage was limited to the kitchen area, but there was extensive smoke and water damage throughout the apartment.
Smoke inhalation reportedly caused the death of the cats.
The tenants were not able to stay in the apartment due to the smoke damage. They are not expected to live there again until the kitchen is gutted and fixed.
The blaze was discovered by a male living in the home who had just returned from shopping, Irvine said.
Firefighters from Heuvelton were on standby by Ogdensburg fire.
Rescue personnel and police assisted on scene of the fire.
No injuries to firefighters or tenants were reported.
