CANTON -- Two village residents were jailed following a string of thefts last month involving bicycles, mail and a purse, according to Canton police.

On March 23, Canton police officers said they observed two subjects, one with a bicycle and one without, steal a second bicycle from the St. Lawrence University campus near Park Street.

The subjects were allegedly wanted by police for an unrelated incident involving a stolen purse, wallet, credit and debit card.

A search warrant was granted from Canton Town Court for the subject’s residence. Police located several items linked to two other reported larcenies.

Cory S. Chambers, 27, and Amanda E. Haggerty, 27, both of 15 Hodskin St., Apt. 4, were charged with one count of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property stemming from an incident around March 17-18 on Nickerson Street. Some of that property was recovered, police said.

Chambers was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fifth-degree conspiracy and attempted petit larceny following investigation of a March 1 incident involving a stolen debit card on Chapel Street. Haggerty was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fifth-degree conspiracy and petit larceny, police said.

The pair was charged with criminal possession of stolen property stemming from an incident reported to the police March 14 where a mailed package was stolen from a Hodskin Street residence, officers said. Haggerty and Chambers each have pending charges of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy related to the theft of the bicycle from SLU on Park Street. The delay is because police have not been able to track down the owner of the bike, which was recovered by police.

St. Lawrence Safety & Security assisted Canton officers with locating the bike’s owner, police said.

Additional charges may be pending, according to police.

Chambers and Haggerty were both arraigned in Canton Town Court and initially held at St. Lawrence County Jail on $2,000 bail, officers said.
